Why go

Deurali is a cluster of lodges in the upper Modi Khola gorge, where the forest gives way to grass, shrubs and rock. It is the last stop below Machhapuchhre Base Camp and the usual overnight before the final day into the Annapurna Sanctuary.

'Deurali' is a common Nepali word for a pass or high point on a trail, which is why many places in the hills share the name. This one sits in a narrow section of the valley under steep walls, with waterfalls on the cliffs after rain.

Above Deurali, the trail crosses several avalanche paths on the way to Bagar and Machhapuchhre Base Camp, so lodges and the ACAP post here are the place to ask about conditions.

History and culture

Like the other upper lodges, Deurali is run by families from Chhomrong and nearby Gurung villages under local and ACAP rules. The upper Modi Khola has seen fatal avalanches in heavy snow years, and closures of the trail above Deurali after heavy snowfall are part of local practice.

Things to do in Deurali (Annapurna Sanctuary)

  • Acclimatise and rest

An afternoon walk a little above the lodges and back helps acclimatisation before the climb to 4,130 m.

  • Ask about avalanche risk

After heavy snow, check with lodges and the ACAP post before crossing the slide paths towards Bagar.
