Why go

Bamboo is a small group of trekking lodges in the narrow, forested gorge of the Modi Khola, about 5-6 hours above Chhomrong. It takes its name from the thick stands of bamboo that cover the slopes here, mixed with rhododendron and oak.

There is no village: the lodges exist for trekkers on the Annapurna Base Camp route, and most people stop here on the way up and again on the way down. The gorge is steep-sided and shady, so Bamboo gets little sun and the peaks are hidden from the lodges.

Above Bamboo the trail continues to Dobhan and Himalaya, then leaves the forest for the upper gorge below Deurali.

History and culture

The lodges in the upper Modi Khola are built on land of Chhomrong village and operate under rules agreed between the local lodge committee and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, including limits on building and set menus. The Gurung people of the area traditionally regarded the Sanctuary beyond as sacred, which is one reason meat is often not served in the upper lodges.

Things to do in Bamboo

  • Forest walk

The trail above and below Bamboo passes through dense, mossy forest where langur monkeys and forest birds are often seen.

  • Check trail conditions

Ask lodges about snow and avalanche conditions above Deurali before continuing, especially in winter and spring.
