Bagmati Provinceरामेछाप
A quiet middle-hill district east of Kathmandu, best known to travellers for the Manthali airport used for flights to Lukla.
Ramechhap sits in the middle hills east of Kathmandu, between Dolakha to the north and Sindhuli to the south. Kavrepalanchok and Sindhupalchok lie to the west, and Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu to the east. The Sunkoshi river runs along the southern edge, the Tamakoshi flows through the district to join it, and the Likhu river marks much of the eastern boundary. The land climbs from low, warm valleys to higher hills in the north.
Tamang, Sunuwar, Magar, Newar, Brahmin and Chhetri communities live here, and most people depend on farming. Manthali, the headquarters, stands near the Tamakoshi and Sunkoshi confluence and has grown in recent years with improved road links. Few travellers stay long, but many pass through Manthali's airport on the way to the Everest region, and the hills offer rural walking well off the main routes.
Town or village

Manthali is reached by road from Kathmandu, usually via Dhulikhel and the B.P. Highway, a drive of several hours. Many trekkers make this journey before dawn in peak seasons to catch flights from Manthali airport to Lukla. Rural roads link the headquarters with the northern hill areas.
Autumn and spring are the best seasons, with dry trails and clear skies; the lower valleys are hot before the monsoon, and the June to September rains often disrupt roads.
