Why go

Syabrubesi is a compact village on the Bhote Koshi in Rasuwa district, at the point where the Langtang Khola comes down from the east. For most trekkers it is where the bus or jeep from Kathmandu ends and the walk up the Langtang Valley begins. The main street is lined with guesthouses and small shops, and there is a hot spring by the river.

Within the Langtang region it serves as the gateway to three routes: the Langtang Valley trail east to Lama Hotel and Kyanjin Gompa, the climb to Thulo Syabru for Gosaikunda, and the Tamang Heritage Trail through the villages to the north. Trekkers usually arrive in the afternoon after a long drive and leave early the next morning.

History and culture

The surrounding hills are home mainly to Tamang communities, and the village grew as a stop on the road towards the Tibet border at Rasuwagadhi. Much of it was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and has since been rebuilt. Floods reported on 26 August 2026 caused serious damage to roads and infrastructure in Rasuwa and near the border, so check the current state of the road before planning a trip.

Risks and conditions

Seasonal risks around Syabrubesi

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Kathmandu to Trishuli, Dhunche and Syabrubesi road climbs steep hillsides that soak up monsoon rain, and landslide blockages are a normal feature of the season in these hills.

    Landslide damming (Nepal) (Wikipedia)

  • Road blockageshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

Expect the Rasuwa road to be slower in the monsoon: the bus run that takes 8 to 11 hours in dry weather typically takes longer when it rains, and slides can hold vehicles up.

    Langtang Valley Trek (Wikivoyage)

  • Floodinghigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

Syabrubesi sits on the valley floor at the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola confluence, where monsoon flows run high and a landslide dam breaking out upstream can send a flash flood down the river.

    Landslide damming (Nepal) (Wikipedia)

  • Snowlow in a typical yearJan-Feb

Localised snowfall is reported in January and February. At this altitude it rarely lies for long, but it can slow the trails and roads higher up the valley.

    Langtang National Park (Wikivoyage)

  • Coldlow in a typical yearDec-Feb

Winter nights are cold at about 1,460 m but snow is unusual at the village itself.

Check current conditions before you travel

Roads, trails, passes and flights change with the weather and with roadworks, and nothing on this page describes conditions today. Before you set off, check the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology for weather and flood warnings, the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Portal for incidents, and the local authority, police or your licensed operator for road, trail and flight status.

Practical tips

  • Buy last snacks and supplies here; choice is limited further up.
  • Mobile signal is usually available in the village but becomes patchy up the valley.
  • Carry enough cash in rupees for the trek; do not rely on an ATM here.
  • Landslides can block the road in the monsoon; build a spare day into your plan.
