Why go

Langtang village is the main settlement of the upper Langtang Valley, where the trail leaves the forest and the valley opens into yak pastures under Langtang Lirung. The present village, often called New Langtang, was rebuilt a short distance from the original site after the 2015 earthquake. A memorial stands at the entrance.

For trekkers it is the second night on the way up, between Lama Hotel and Kyanjin Gompa. The village has lodges, small gompas and mani walls, and the walk on to Kyanjin is short, so many people spend time here looking at the stone houses, prayer wheels and fields of potato and buckwheat.

History and culture

On 25 April 2015 the earthquake set off a huge avalanche and rockfall from the slopes above the old village, burying it almost completely. Several hundred villagers and visitors died, and published death tolls differ. Survivors returned to rebuild, and tourism is now central to the village's recovery.

The people of Langtang follow Tibetan Buddhism, with gompas, chortens and long mani walls along the trail. Yak and cattle herding, potatoes and barley have long been the base of the local economy.

Risks and conditions

Seasonal risks around Langtang village

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Langtang gorge is geologically active and the main trail was rerouted after the 2015 earthquake; monsoon rain loosens the slopes, so slide-prone sections are best crossed without lingering.

    Langtang Valley Trek (Wikivoyage)

  • Coldhigh in a typical yearDec-Feb

December to February brings hard frost and deep cold at this height, with short days and lightly heated lodges; a four-season sleeping bag and down layers are normal kit.

    Langtang National Park (Wikivoyage)

  • Altitudemoderate in a typical yearAll year

General information, not medical advice: above about 3,000 m altitude illness becomes a real risk. Gain sleeping height slowly, learn the symptoms of headache with nausea, breathlessness or unsteady walking, and go down if they get worse. See a doctor before travelling and carry insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

    Altitude sickness (Wikivoyage)

  • Avalanche terrainmoderate in a typical yearDec-Apr

The upper Langtang valley is geologically active and avalanche paths reach the valley floor; the 2015 earthquake-triggered avalanche that destroyed Langtang village is the extreme case, while snow-loaded slopes in winter and early spring are the ordinary seasonal concern.

    Langtang Valley Trek (Wikivoyage)

  • Snowmoderate in a typical yearDec-Mar

Snow lies on the valley trail above about 3,000 m through winter and into March, and some upper-valley lodges shut for the coldest weeks.

Roads, trails, passes and flights change with the weather and with roadworks, and nothing on this page describes conditions today. Practical tips

  • Above about 2,500-3,000 m, altitude sickness is a risk: climb slowly, and go down if headache, nausea or unusual tiredness get worse. General information, not medical advice.
  • Walk clockwise around mani walls and chortens.
  • Ask before photographing people or the inside of gompas.
  • Mobile signal is unreliable; some lodges offer paid Wi-Fi.
