Town or village
Chaurjahari
A market town on a broad terrace above the Bheri river in Rukum West, with an airstrip and a regional hospital.
Karnali Provinceपश्चिम रुकुम
Middle-hill district centred on Musikot, known for Syarpu Lake, terraced farmland and its place in the history of the Maoist movement.
Rukum West lies in the middle hills of Karnali Province, with Rukum East to the east, Jajarkot to the west and Salyan to the south. Rivers such as the Sani Bheri drain the district towards the Bheri, and the land rises from warm valleys to forested ridges. Musikot, the headquarters, sits on a hillside, while Chaurjahari lies in a broad river valley further west.
The population includes Magar, Chhetri, Brahmin, Thakuri and Dalit communities, and most people live by farming and livestock, with many working abroad. The wider Rukum area was a heartland of the Maoist insurgency, and that history remains part of local identity. Travellers are few, but those who come visit Syarpu Lake, a quiet lake surrounded by villages and farmland, and walk among the terraced hills.

Rukum West is reached by road from Dang through Salyan, a long day's drive from the plains, and roads also connect it with Jajarkot and Surkhet. Chaurjahari has a small airstrip, while the nearest larger airports are at Nepalgunj and Surkhet.
Autumn and spring are the best seasons, as the monsoon brings heavy rain and road disruption, while winters are dry and mild by day with cold nights.
