Chaurjahari is a market town in the south-west of Rukum West district, Karnali Province, set on a broad, fairly level terrace above the Bheri river. The name refers to the open, flat land (chaur) on which it stands, unusual in this steep hill country. It is one of the larger towns in the district and has a small airstrip and a well-known mission hospital that serves patients from a wide area of the Karnali hills.
The town is a transport and trading hub for the surrounding villages and for neighbouring Jajarkot across the river. For travellers it is a practical base for exploring the Bheri valley and the villages of western Rukum, and a possible entry point to the district by air when flights operate from Nepalgunj.
There are no major sights, but the open terrace, views over the river and the surrounding hills, and the bustle of a working hill bazaar make it a pleasant place to stop. Walks lead down to the river and up to villages on the slopes above.
The terrace at Chaurjahari has long been farmed, and the town grew as a market for the surrounding area. The hospital, established by a mission organisation, became one of the most important medical facilities in this remote part of Nepal and helped the town grow as a regional centre.
Like the rest of Rukum, the area was affected by the Maoist conflict, and more recently by the 2023 earthquake centred in neighbouring Jajarkot. The population is mixed, with Magar, Chhetri, Thakuri, Brahmin and Dalit communities, and the town is part of Chaurjahari Municipality.
