Why go

Tansen is the headquarters of Palpa district and its main town, spread over the crest and south face of the Mahabharat range above the Siddhartha Highway between Butwal and Pokhara. It lies about 30 km north of Butwal and roughly 120 km south of Pokhara. The highway bypasses the old centre, so the core of Tansen is a maze of steep, narrow lanes lined with Newar shophouses, temples and courtyards that are pleasant to explore on foot.

Within the town are Tansen Durbar, the palace in the centre; the three-tiered Amar Narayan temple; the Bhagawati temple; Sitalpati square with its octagonal pavilion; and the Mul Dhoka gateway. A short climb above the bazaar, Srinagar Hill has pine forest and, on clear days, a view along the Himalaya from Kanjiroba and Dhaulagiri past the Annapurnas to Manaslu. The town is also the base for the walk down to Rani Mahal on the Kali Gandaki, described on the Palpa page.

Tansen is best known for its crafts. Dhaka, the patterned hand-woven cloth used for the Nepali topi and shawls, is made on looms around the bazaar, and Palpali brass and copper vessels such as the karuwa water jug are sold in local shops. The town makes an easy overnight stop between Lumbini and Pokhara, with a cool climate compared with the plains.

History and culture

Tansen was the seat of the Palpa kingdom, ruled from the 16th century by the Sen dynasty, which under Mukunda Sen became one of the strongest hill states and even threatened the Kathmandu Valley. The area is the heartland of the Magar people, and the name Tansen is often explained as a Magar word meaning 'northern settlement'. Palpa was annexed by the expanding Kingdom of Nepal in the early 19th century, and Newar traders settled here, turning Tansen into a bazaar on the route between India and Tibet via the Kali Gandaki.

The Amar Narayan temple was built in 1806 by Amar Singh Thapa, and the Bhagawati temple in 1815 to mark a Nepali victory over British forces near Butwal. Tansen Durbar, a large Rana-era palace built in 1927, housed government offices; it was badly damaged in a Maoist attack in January 2006 and later rebuilt. Major festivals include Dashain, Tihar and the Bhagawati Jatra, and the United Mission Hospital, founded in 1954, has long been a regional institution.
