Far Westमाथिल्लो मुगु उपत्यका
A remote restricted valley of Tibetan Buddhist villages along the upper Mugu Karnali, north of Rara.
This is the upper valley of the Mugu Karnali towards the Tibetan border, not Mugu district as a whole or Rara Lake.
Higher seasonal exposure: snow (Nov-Mar), landslides (Jun-Sep).
The upper Mugu valley follows the Mugu Karnali river north and east from Gamgadhi towards the border with Tibet, in Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality. It is one of the most remote inhabited corners of Nepal: a land of high stone villages, barley fields, yak pastures, monasteries and long mani walls, set among bare and forested slopes below snow peaks. Mugu village, which gives the district its name, is the largest settlement in the upper valley.
The valley is a restricted area and receives very few foreign visitors, almost all of them on organised camping treks. Routes combine Rara Lake with the upper valley, and longer expeditions link Mugu with Dolpo to the east or Humla to the west along sections of the Great Himalaya Trail. Facilities are almost non-existent outside the villages, so treks are fully supported with tents, food and staff.
For those who make the effort, the reward is a living Tibetan Buddhist culture in a setting few outsiders see, along with wide mountain landscapes and quiet trails.
The communities of the upper Mugu valley speak Tibetan dialects and follow Tibetan Buddhism, and they have long traded across the border with Tibet, exchanging grain and goods from the south for salt and wool. Villages are built of stone with flat roofs, and each has its own gompa and chortens.
Life in the valley is shaped by altitude and isolation: farming is limited to a short summer season, herding is important, and many people spend the winter at lower altitudes or travel for trade and work. The restricted-area status, together with the difficulty of access, has meant that the valley has changed less than many other parts of the Himalaya, although road building and new connections are reaching further north.
