Why go

Kakarbhitta is the busy border town at the eastern end of the Mahendra (East-West) Highway, where the road crosses the Mechi river into India at Panitanki in West Bengal. It is the main land crossing between Nepal and the Darjeeling hills, Sikkim and the wider north-east of India, and also a common entry point for travellers coming from Bagdogra airport and Siliguri.

The town is a transport hub more than a destination. Long-distance buses leave from here for Kathmandu, Pokhara and other cities, and jeeps run up into Ilam's tea hills. Around the bazaar are markets, money changers, hotels and eateries geared to people in transit, and tea gardens lie close to the town on the plains and lower slopes.

If you have time to spare, Kakarbhitta makes a convenient base for short trips to tea estates in the district, to the Ilam hills, and to religious sites in Jhapa such as Arjundhara Dham.

History and culture

Kakarbhitta is part of Mechinagar municipality, named after the Mechi river that marks Nepal's eastern border. The area was once forested lowland home to Rajbanshi, Dhimal, Meche and other indigenous Terai communities, and much of it was cleared and settled during the twentieth century by people from the hills and beyond.

Its growth as a border town followed the building of the East-West Highway, which made it the eastern gateway of Nepal's road network. Trade with India, transport and tea now drive the local economy, and the town has a mixed population speaking Nepali, Maithili, Bengali, Rajbanshi and other languages.
