Why go

Antu Danda is a ridge in the east of Ilam district, close to the border with Darjeeling in India, and is the most popular sunrise viewpoint in Nepal's tea country. From the top, on clear mornings, the sun rises over the plains to the south and east, while to the north the Kanchenjunga massif catches the first light. When cloud fills the valleys below, the view becomes a sea of cloud with hills standing out like islands.

The approach runs through Ilam's tea landscape, with gardens of neat bushes covering the slopes around Kanyam and Fikkal. Many visitors combine Antu with these tea gardens, with Ilam bazaar and with Mai Pokhari to the north, in a short loop through the district.

The village below the ridge has homestays and simple lodges that open in the early hours for the walk up to the viewpoint, and weekends and holidays in the dry season bring crowds of Nepali and Indian visitors. Arriving the evening before and walking up in the dark is the usual way to see sunrise.

History and culture

The Antu area is home to Limbu, Rai, Lepcha, Sherpa, Brahmin and Chhetri communities, among others, and lies in a region with long links across the border to Darjeeling and Sikkim. Tea has shaped the local economy since the first plantations in Ilam in the 19th century, and smallholder tea farming now covers much of the surrounding hills.

Domestic tourism grew quickly here once roads improved, and Antu Danda is now one of the best-known names in eastern Nepal tourism. A small Antu Pokhari pond and shrines near the ridge are local landmarks, and the homestay economy is an important source of income for village families.
