Kakarbhitta
Nepal's easternmost border town on the Mechi river, the main crossing to Siliguri, Darjeeling and Sikkim.
Chitwan & Teraiभद्रपुर
The headquarters town of Jhapa on the Mechi river, with the airport that serves Nepal's far east.
Bhadrapur is a quiet Terai town on the west bank of the Mechi river, which here forms the border with India. Together with neighbouring Chandragadhi it serves as the headquarters of Jhapa district, and its airport is the main air gateway to the far east of Nepal, used by travellers heading for Ilam's tea hills, Panchthar, Taplejung and the Kanchenjunga region.
For most visitors Bhadrapur is a place to land and move on, but it has a relaxed character compared with the busier highway towns of Birtamod and Kakarbhitta. The flat surrounding countryside is a mix of rice fields, betel nut palms, bamboo groves and tea gardens, and village life in the area is shaped by the many communities of the eastern Terai.
From Bhadrapur, roads lead north to the Mahendra Highway at Charali and Birtamod, and from there up the Mechi Highway into the hills.
Because many travellers pass through on their way to or from the hills, the town is used to visitors and arranging onward transport is usually straightforward. Jeeps to Ilam and beyond can be booked locally, and taxis run to Birtamod and Kakarbhitta.
The Bhadrapur area has long been home to Rajbanshi, Satar (Santhal), Dhimal and other Terai communities, and later drew settlers from the hills and from across the border. Its position on the Mechi river made it a trading point with neighbouring Bengal.
Bhadrapur's role as a district centre and its airport have kept it important to the eastern region, even as newer towns on the East-West Highway have grown faster. Festivals such as Chhath, Dashain and Tihar are widely celebrated, along with the rituals of the indigenous communities.
