Gaur is the administrative headquarters of Rautahat district, a market town on the Indian border in the central Terai. The border here faces Bairgania in Bihar, and the two towns are closely linked by trade, family ties and daily movement of people across the open frontier.
The town is not a tourist destination, but it offers an unfiltered view of life in the Madhesh plains: busy bazaars selling cloth, grain and household goods, cycle rickshaws, temples and ponds, and a rich calendar of festivals. Travellers interested in the Terai away from the main routes may find a night here rewarding, especially during Chhath, when the ponds and river banks fill with devotees.
Rautahat lies between two important rivers, the Bagmati to the east and the Lalbakaiya to the west, and the low, flat land around Gaur is fertile but prone to monsoon flooding. Rice, wheat, sugarcane and lentils are grown widely in the surrounding villages.
Rautahat's population is largely Madhesi, with Bhojpuri and Bajjika the main languages in the south of the district, alongside Maithili and Nepali. There is also a significant Muslim community, and Eid is celebrated alongside Hindu festivals.
Gaur's role as district headquarters dates from the administrative organisation of the Terai, and the town has grown slowly as a service and trading centre for southern Rautahat. Its location on the open border has made cross-border commerce central to the local economy.
Flooding along the Bagmati and Lalbakaiya has repeatedly affected the district, and embankment and river control works are an important feature of the landscape around the town.
