Why go

Kalaiya is the administrative headquarters of Bara district, a market town on the flat plains east of Birgunj. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself, but it is the most convenient base for exploring the heritage of Bara, including Gadhimai Temple at Bariyarpur and the ruins of Simraungadh further south.

The town has a lively bazaar where farmers from the surrounding villages buy and sell grain, vegetables, cloth and household goods. Rickshaws and tempos fill the main roads, and the evening markets are a good place to try Terai street food and sweets. Small temples and ponds are scattered through the older parts of town.

For travellers, Kalaiya offers a glimpse of everyday life in a Bhojpuri-speaking Madhesi town, away from the main tourist routes. It is close enough to Birgunj that many visitors simply pass through, but staying a night makes an early start to the rural sites easier.

History and culture

Bara district lies in the heart of the old Mithila and Bhojpur cultural region, and Kalaiya shares the festivals of the wider Terai. Chhath, when devotees make offerings to the setting and rising sun at ponds and rivers, is one of the most important events of the year, along with Holi, Dashain and Tihar.

As the district seat, Kalaiya houses government offices, schools and colleges, and has grown with the agricultural economy of the surrounding plains. It was upgraded to a sub-metropolitan city in the local government restructuring of the late 2010s.

The proximity of the five-yearly Gadhimai Mela means the town is periodically overwhelmed by pilgrims, when its roads and lodgings fill well beyond their usual capacity.
