Chitwan & Teraiचन्द्रपुर
A highway town in northern Rautahat at the foot of the Chure hills, the main road gateway to the district.
This is Chandrapur on the East-West Highway in Rautahat district, Nepal, not the city of Chandrapur in Maharashtra, India.
Chandrapur, long known as Chandranigahapur, is a town on the East-West Highway in the north of Rautahat district. It sits where the flat plains begin to rise towards the forested Chure hills, and it is the main junction for roads running south to Gaur and the rest of the district.
The town has grown quickly around the highway and has become the largest commercial centre in Rautahat. Its bazaar is lined with shops, eateries, bus counters and workshops, and long-distance buses between Kathmandu and the eastern Terai stop here. Like other highway towns, it is a place to pass through rather than a destination, but it offers food, rooms and transport connections for travellers heading into rural Rautahat.
North of the highway, the Chure hills are covered in sal forest, and the edge of the forest is close to town. Seasonal streams cross the plain, carrying sand and gravel down from the hills.
Chandrapur's population mixes hill settlers, who moved down to the Terai in large numbers after malaria control in the mid twentieth century, with Madhesi and Tharu communities. Nepali is widely spoken in the town, while Bhojpuri and Bajjika are common further south.
The East-West Highway transformed the settlement into a market town, and it has since become a municipality serving a large rural area. The town's festivals reflect this mix, with Dashain and Tihar celebrated alongside Chhath and Holi.
The Chure range north of town is ecologically fragile, and conservation of its forests is a national priority because erosion in the hills increases sedimentation and flooding in the plains below.
