About Terhathum

Terhathum is a hill district of Koshi Province lying between the Tamor and Arun valleys. Dhankuta is to the south-west, Sankhuwasabha to the north-west, Taplejung to the north and Panchthar to the east, with the Tamor river along its eastern side. The land rises from warm valleys to high forested ridges in the north around Basantapur, which lead on to the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale area.

Limbu culture is strong here, and the district is famous for weaving Dhaka cloth, used for the Nepali topi and shawls. Farming, livestock and small trade support most households, and Myanglung is the headquarters. Travellers come for Basantapur's cool climate and views, the rhododendron forests of the Tinjure ridge in spring, and to see Dhaka being woven.
