About Okhaldhunga

Okhaldhunga is a mid-hill district in the west of Koshi Province. The Sun Koshi forms its southern boundary and the Dudh Koshi its eastern edge, with Khotang across that river. Solukhumbu lies to the north, Ramechhap to the west and Udayapur to the south. Hills climb from warm river valleys to cool, forested ridges in the north, from where the higher Himalaya can be seen on clear days.

The district is home to Rai, Magar, Sherpa, Newar, Brahmin-Chhetri and other communities, and most people farm terraced land. Okhaldhunga Bazaar is an old administrative town on a hillside. Few tourists stop for long, but it suits travellers interested in rural hill life, and the road through the district is one of the overland routes towards Salleri and Phaplu in Solukhumbu.

Getting there

Roads reach Okhaldhunga from the south, linking with Udayapur and the Terai across the Sun Koshi, and continue north towards Solukhumbu; journeys are long and parts are rough. Rumjatar airport in the district has had flights from Kathmandu, though services are not always regular.

Best time to visit

Autumn and spring are the best times, clear and mild; the monsoon brings heavy rain and road blockages, and winter is dry with cold nights on the higher ridges.
