About Parbat

Parbat is one of the smallest districts in Nepal, set in the middle hills west of Pokhara. The Kali Gandaki forms much of its boundary with Baglung, and the Modi Khola flows down from the Annapurna Sanctuary to join it near Kusma, the district centre. Kaski lies to the east, Myagdi to the north and Syangja to the south, and the forested Panchase ridge rises on its south-eastern side.

Brahmin-Chhetri, Magar, Gurung and Dalit communities farm the terraced slopes, and many families depend on remittances. Kusma sits on a plateau above deep river gorges, and the bridges spanning them have become a draw in their own right, including a high suspension bridge over the Modi Khola used for bungee jumping and swings. Travellers mostly pass through on the way to Beni and Mustang, or come for short hikes and gorge activities.

Getting there

Kusma lies on the highway from Pokhara to Baglung and Beni, which runs through Nayapul, and is usually a drive of a couple of hours from Pokhara. Pokhara has the nearest airport with regular flights from Kathmandu.

Best time to visit

Autumn and spring are best for clear views and walking; the monsoon brings heavy rain and landslides to the hill roads, and winter is mild with cool mornings.
