The Shaileshwari temple in Silgadhi is the principal goddess shrine of Doti district and one of the most important temples in the far west. Shaileshwari, the goddess of the mountains, is regarded as the protector of Doti, and the temple stands at the heart of the old bazaar on the ridge above the Seti valley.
The temple complex has the main shrine, smaller shrines and open spaces where pilgrims gather, with the lanes of Silgadhi around it. Daily worship gives it a steady, local atmosphere, and at festival times it becomes the focus of fairs that draw crowds from across the region.
For travellers passing through Doti on the way to Khaptad National Park, a visit to the temple is the best introduction to the culture of the area, and it takes only an hour or so from either Silgadhi or Dipayal.
Shaileshwari has long been linked with the rulers of Doti, and the temple's fairs are bound up with the region's identity. The best known is held during Dashain, when processions, music and offerings fill the bazaar, and a further gathering is held in the spring Navaratri. Local tradition associates the goddess with protection of the land and its people, and many households in Doti make offerings here at important moments in life.
Deuda singing and dancing, the signature folk performance of the far west, often accompanies festival gatherings in Silgadhi. As at other goddess temples, animal sacrifice may take place on some festival days. Visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes before entering and ask permission before photographing worship.
