A pine-scented ridge town above the far-western Terai, with an old Gorkhali fort and views north to the Himalaya.
The hill town that is the headquarters of Dadeldhura district, with its old fort.
Amargadhi is the headquarters of Dadeldhura district and the town most people simply call Dadeldhura. It stretches along a forested ridge in the hills north of the Terai, a cool and green change from the plains below. Chir pine forest covers the slopes around the town, and on clear days the snow peaks of the far west, and of Kumaon across the border, can be seen from the high points nearby.
The town is a regional centre with a bazaar, government offices, schools and a hospital, and it is the first major stop for many travellers heading into the far-western hills. The main road from the Terai climbs up to Dadeldhura and continues north towards Baitadi and Darchula and east towards Doti, so the town is a natural place to pause overnight.
Its main sight is the old fort that gives the town its name, set on the ridge above the bazaar. A walk around the fort and the forest paths beyond it, a visit to the local temples and an evening in the bazaar make for a relaxed stay.
Amargadhi takes its name from Amar Singh Thapa, the Gorkhali commander who led the westward campaigns of the unifying Shah state in the late eighteenth century. A fort, the Amargadhi Kila, was built on the ridge during that period to secure the newly conquered western hills, and its stone walls still stand. Before the Gorkhali conquest, this region was part of the Doti kingdom, whose rulers left forts and temples across Dadeldhura.
The people of Dadeldhura are mostly Khas communities, Chhetri, Brahmin and Thakuri, with Dalit and other groups, and the local language is Doteli. Deuda song and dance, in which lines of people link arms and exchange verses, is the signature folk tradition of the far west and is performed at festivals and fairs here. The Gaura festival in late summer is one of the region's great celebrations.
