About Rolpa

Rolpa is a hill district in the north-west of Lumbini Province, bordered by Pyuthan to the east, Dang to the south, Salyan and Rukum West to the west and Rukum East and Baglung to the north. Its landscape is steep and folded, rising from warm river valleys in the south to high forested ridges and pastures in the north, where Jaljala is the best-known high point.

The Kham Magar are the main community in much of the district, with their own language, dress and festivals, alongside Brahmin, Chhetri and Dalit communities. Most people farm and raise livestock, and many young people work abroad. Rolpa was a heartland of the Maoist movement during the armed conflict, and some visitors come to understand that history. Others come for village homestays, Kham Magar culture and treks to Jaljala's open meadows.
