Why go

Khalanga is the headquarters bazaar of Salyan district in Karnali Province, located in Sharada Municipality. It sits on a hillside in the middle hills, between the Rapti region to the south and the Bheri valley to the north, and serves as the district's market and administrative centre, with offices, schools, a hospital and shops.

The town is a convenient base for the district's main sights, including Kupinde Lake and the hilltop shrine of Kumakh Malika. Around Khalanga, the hills are terraced and dotted with villages, and Salyan is known within Nepal for its farm produce, including fruit and ginger. Walks around the town give views over the surrounding ridges.

Salyan sees few outside visitors, and its appeal lies in its everyday hill life and quiet countryside rather than in famous monuments. Facilities are simple but adequate for a short stay.

History and culture

Salyan was one of the small hill states of western Nepal before unification, and the town of Khalanga has served as the district centre since then. The name Khalanga, common to many district headquarters in western Nepal, comes from the term for a military camp or garrison from the period of Gorkhali expansion.

The district's population is mainly Magar, Chhetri, Thakuri, Brahmin and Dalit, and Magar communities have a strong presence in the northern hills. Salyan was affected by the Maoist conflict like neighbouring Rukum and Rolpa. Dashain and Tihar are the main festivals, alongside fairs at local shrines. For visitors, the town offers a glimpse of district life in the middle hills: morning markets, school crowds, offices and teashops where travellers from the surrounding villages gather before the buses leave.
