Why go

Dharmasala, also called Larke Phedi, is a small seasonal stop at about 4,460 m at the foot of the Larkya La. It is not a village: a few basic lodge buildings and tent sites stand on moraine ground, used by trekkers for the night before the pass.

The walk in from Samdo is short, which gives time to rest, eat and prepare. Departures for the pass are usually before dawn, to cross the exposed ground before the afternoon wind and cloud.

History and culture

Until around 2010 there was no lodge below the pass and trekkers had to camp; a teahouse here helped turn the Manaslu Circuit into a teahouse trek. The name dharmasala refers to a rest house for travellers, and phedi means the foot of a pass.
