Chitwan & Teraiलहान
The largest town in Siraha district, a busy East-West Highway hub known across the region for its eye hospital.
Lahan is a town on the East-West Highway in Siraha district and the district's main commercial centre. It is a busy, practical place, with a long bazaar along the highway, bus parks, markets and the services that serve a wide rural area of the eastern Terai.
The town is widely known for its eye hospital, which has treated large numbers of patients from Nepal and from neighbouring Indian states, and which brings many visitors to Lahan. For travellers, the town is a convenient overnight stop on the highway and a base for Salhesh Phulbari, Siraha town and the sights of neighbouring Saptari.
North of the highway the Chure hills rise, while the plains to the south are covered by rice fields, ponds and Maithili villages. The roads south from Lahan lead towards Siraha bazaar and the Indian border.
Lahan grew with the construction of the East-West Highway into a significant market town, drawing settlers from the plains and the hills. Maithili is the main language of the surrounding villages, while Nepali is widely used in the bazaar.
The region is part of the Mithila cultural area, and local festivals include Chhath, Holi, Jur Sital and the festivities associated with the folk hero Raja Salhesh, whose garden at Salhesh Phulbari is nearby.
Lahan's role as a medical centre has shaped its economy, with lodges, pharmacies and eateries catering to patients and their families. The steady flow of people from across the eastern Terai and beyond gives the town a more varied, outward-looking character than its size might suggest.
