Sudurpashchim Provinceकैलाली
A busy Terai district on the Karnali and the Indian border, home to Dhangadhi, Tharu villages and the wetlands of Ghodaghodi Tal.
Kailali spreads across the flat Terai of Sudurpashchim and the forested Chure hills to its north, with India along its southern border. The Karnali River forms its eastern boundary with Bardiya, and Kanchanpur lies to the west, while the hill districts of Dadeldhura, Doti and Achham rise to the north. Rivers such as the Mohana cross the plains, and the land is low and warm throughout.
Tharu communities, including Rana and Dangaura Tharu, are the district's oldest inhabitants, living alongside hill migrants who settled the plains in recent decades. Dhangadhi is the largest city of the far west and a commercial and transport hub. Farming of rice, wheat and other crops is the mainstay. Travellers come for Tharu culture, for birdwatching at Ghodaghodi Tal, and as a gateway to the hills and to Bardiya and Shuklaphanta.
