Dharan
A lively foothill city where the plains meet the Mahabharat hills, with hilltop temples, Gurkha heritage and the road up to Bhedetar.
धनकुटा
A tidy ridge-top town on the Koshi Highway above Dharan, and a pleasant base for the eastern hills.
Dhankuta is the headquarters of Dhankuta district, a hill town strung along a ridge on the Koshi Highway north of Dharan. The road climbs to it in a long series of bends over Bhedetar, and the town is the first sizeable stop for travellers heading into the eastern middle hills towards Hile, Basantapur, Bhojpur and the Arun valley.
Dhankuta has a reputation within Nepal as a clean and orderly town, with a paved old bazaar, pedestrian lanes, small temples and a cool climate compared with the plains below. Orange orchards and farmland cover the slopes around it, and the town is busy with schools, colleges and government offices that serve the wider district.
For visitors it is a calm place to break the journey, walk the bazaar, look out over the Tamor and Arun river country, and get a feel for life in an eastern hill town, before continuing higher towards Hile and the rhododendron ridges of Terhathum.
The Dhankuta area is part of the traditional lands of the Kirat Rai and Limbu, and Magar, Newar, Brahmin and Chhetri communities also live in and around the town. Kirat festivals such as Sakela are celebrated alongside Dashain, Tihar and other Hindu festivals.
Dhankuta was for many years an important administrative centre for eastern Nepal and served as the headquarters of the former Eastern Development Region, which brought offices, schools and a degree of planning to the town. Newar traders built the old bazaar, and its brick houses with carved wooden windows recall that period. The opening of the Koshi Highway linked the town by road to Dharan and the Terai and changed its economy, turning it into a market hub for farm produce from the hills.
