Muktinath, Nepal🔱

Muktinath

Mustang · 3,800m · best Mar–Nov

A temple sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike, ringed by 108 water spouts beneath the Thorong La pass.

🕉️ The story & spiritual meaning

Muktinath means 'lord of liberation.' Here, uniquely, all five elements meet: 108 sacred water spouts, an eternal natural-gas flame burning beside a spring — fire dancing on water — inside earth, under the high Himalayan sky. Hindus find Vishnu here; Buddhists, the dakinis. Bathing beneath all 108 spouts washes away lifetimes of karma.
