A medieval mud-walled village where the green Kali Gandaki oasis meets the desert of Upper Mustang β narrow tunnels, a 600-year-old monastery, and Hindu ancestor rituals at the sacred river confluence.
ποΈ The story & spiritual meaning
Kagbeni β 'kag' means crossroads β guards the confluence where pilgrims perform shraddha rites for their ancestors, releasing them toward liberation in the Kali Gandaki's black fossil-bearing waters (each shaligram stone a form of Vishnu). At the village edges stand ancient clay ghost-eater effigies, protecting the lanes from wandering spirits.
