Gorkha, Nepal🏰

Gorkha

Central Hills · 1,135m · best Oct–Apr

Where modern Nepal began — the hilltop palace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah with Himalayan views to match its history.

🕉️ The story & spiritual meaning

Gorkha takes its name from the saint Gorakhnath, whose cave sits below the palace — and gives its name in turn to the Gurkhas. Nearby Manakamana is the wish-fulfilling goddess: legend says a queen possessed divine powers, and the shrine rose where her devotee's plough struck a stone that bled milk and blood.
